Porsche 918 vs Carrera GT: Which is faster in a drag race?

Not so long ago the Porsche Carrera GT was heralded as one of the world’s best supercars, but as the following drag race will show, time has been most unkind.

The YouTube video from Youtuber Exclusivos no Brasil shows the two iconic machines squaring up for a drag race. Both cars are lined up side by side before the 918 Spyder blasts off towards the horizon faster than an FBI raid of corrupt FIFA official’s hotel room.

Seriously, the Carrera GT looks like a VW Polo in comparison as it struggles to translate the horsepower into forward movement. The hybrid 918, meanwhile, looks totally unphased.

It is hardly surprising the 918 won. Although the Carrera GT has a 5.7-litre V10 with more than 550hp and a top speed of 205mph, the 918 Spyder has 887hp, 211mph top speed and a 0-62mph time of around 2.8 seconds ─ 0.7 seconds slower than its sibling. 0-124mph takes 7.9 seconds, the time it takes your average car to hit 62mph.

In the Carrera GT’s defence, it still looks absolutely stunning more than a decade on and, let’s be honest, it’s not a car to be trifled with, as Paul Walker found out when his friend crashed one, resulting in his death. The driver was also a bit slow to react off the line, adding salt into the wound.

Whether you are bothered by the Carrera GT’s destruction or not, it’s amazing to see just how high the supercar and hypercar bar has been raised over the last few years.
