Qoros 3 Sedan crowned the safest car of 2013

Renault Zoe, Jeep Cherokee and Maserati Ghibli join the Qoros 3 Sedan as some of 2013’s safest cars.

The Qoros 3 Sedan has become the first car developed in China to achieve a full five star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests and was the safest car tested in 2013. The result flies in the face of build quality and safety issues usually associated with Chinese cars.

The Qoros 3 Sedan came up trumps in the small family car category, bettering the BMW i3, Chevrolet Trax and Ford EcoSport. Passenger safety came out as a particular highlight. The Volvo V40 took home the prize in 2012 as well as the highest score of all time.

The Renault Zoe was found to be the safest Supermini in a category that included the Nissan Note and the Renault Captur, while the Lexis IS 300h scored best in the large family car category. Ford’s Tourneo Connect and Kia’s Carens took home the honours when it came to small MPVs, warding off the second place Citroen C4 Picasso.

Maserati’s Ghibli proved to be the safest executive vehicle. In the small 4×4 category the Jeep Cherokee took home gold, having gone up against the Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and the Toyota Rav4.

33 cars were tested in seven different categories in 2013, the results of which were posted on the Euro NCAP website.

Euro NCAP updated its assessment criteria in 2013 to give kudos to manufacturers that make it easy to install child safety seats. 2014 testing will see crash avoidance systems such as emergency braking and Lane Keep Assist go towards the overall star rating.

“The decision to reward collision avoidance technologies on new cars will encourage more widespread fitment and further improve the safety of all road users in Europe,” Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen explained.
