Jaguar and Land Rover fettler Startech is following in the footsteps of Land Rover by releasing a special edition Defender built to celebrate the end of production.
Known as the Startech 68 Series 3.1, this meaty terrain-conquering off-roader gets its name from the fact only 68 will be built, reflecting the 68-year production run of the Land Rover Defender that ceases later in 2015.
It has been designed to reflect the Land Rover Defender Series 3, built between 1971 and 1984. To that end, Brabus has used a Corris Grey Metallic with a Santorini Black Roof, with a new front end, black painted radiator grille, bumper and air intakes to make it tastefully macho.
18-inch black Monostar D alloys wrapped in BF Goodrich All-Terrain A/T tyres go nicely with the understated design, while tinted panoramic glazing ensures your sheepdog is kept hidden from prying eyes.
Vintage may be the inspiration but the interior and tech is anything but. Two round LED headlights light the way, while all other lights make use of energy-efficient LED technology.
The interior features tan light brown and ebony black leather with diamond quilting and black contrasting seams, and sun visors covered in fine black Alcanrara for a touch of luxury. The front seats have special armrests to make off-roading comfortable and are heated so you’re toasty in the winter.
It also has a Startech steering wheel, stainless steel scuff plates and other elements made from aluminium, and a double-DIN multimedia system from Alpine with a 6.1-inch display and DVD, SD and USB playback in addition to Bluetooth connectivity for smartphones and tablets.
Engine duties are taken care of by a 2.2-litre turbodiesel with 122hp and 360Nm of torque from 2,000rpm. 0-62mph takes 15.8 seconds so you won’t be the fastest flat-cap wearer on the road, that’s for sure.
Startech is part of the Brabus Group, which is responsible for some utterly derranged creations including a Mercedes S-Class with 850hp.
Prices start from €67,990 (£48,488) for the five-seater and €69,900 (£49,851) for the seven-seater. Deliveries will begin in September 2015 – get in touch with Startech if you want one.
Land Rover celebrated the end of the Defender with three limited edition special editions of varying cost.
Another more extreme Defender interpretation comes in the form of Kahn’s six-wheeler concept.
