If you’re a Ford owner and you fancy a few more ponies under your bonnet then you’re in luck. Superchips, masters of engine computer hacking, are flogging a DIY upgrade pack that can boost your car’s power by up to 34bhp.
According to Superchips, its Bluefin ‘Plug-in and go’ system can instantly increase engine power in Focus, C-Max, Galaxy, Mondeo or S-Max Ecoboost models.
The upgrade works on 150PS (148bhp), 160PS (158bhp) and 182PS (178bhp) variants of the Ecoboost range. The 150bhp model gains 30bhp at 5,341rpm and an extra 51Nm of torque at 1923rpm. The 160PS gains 34bhp and 59Nm at the same engine speeds, while the 178bhp engine grabs 20bhp more when it’s spinning at 3760rpm and 44Nm the moment it hits 1923rpm
Superchips claims the upgrade provides noticeable gains in responsiveness from 1,500rpm all the way up to 6,500rpm, and allow improved overtaking, towing, load carrying or just general hooning. The company also claims it retains “high levels of economy and driveability.”
Installing the Bluefin upgrade is a DIY affair. It involves connecting the Plug-in and Go handset to your car’s OBDII diagnostic port, which is located on the bulkhead inside the cabin on the driver’s side, and following the on-screen instructions. The upgrade takes a few minutes to complete and is fully reversible, as it saves your engine’s factory settings to the handset.
