Reports suggest that there were no other vehicles involved in the crash, which happened on the 4th July in Los Angeles. Simon Sproule, Tesla spokesman, said, “There aren’t so many ’S’es involved in major crashes, and certainly not quite like this one, so we absolutely want to have a look to understand what happened.”

Tesla confirmed that it is working with the relevant authorities and will be examining the car “as we would with any accident.”

Tesla have yet to elaborate on the circumstances leading up to the theft of the vehicle, but reports suggest that a member of Tesla staff reported the theft to the police as the crash took place.

The same weekend another Model S crashed into the back of a Toyota Corolla. Tragically all three occupants of the Corolla died, but the driver of the Tesla was reported to have only minor injuries.

The Tesla Model S received the highest ever five-star rating on NHTSA crash tests with 99 out of 100. Despite being involved in several high-profile fires, the electric car has an excellent track record of safety with no fatalities.
