Toyota has updated the 2017 GT86, but you would be hard-pressed to spot the new additions as the car’s chief designer admitted it is not a cosmetic facelift.
The keen-eyed observer may have noticed a new front bumper, revised fog light housings, LED lights and a bigger front grille. A new rear spoiler in matt grey can be found at the back, while the front splitter has been adjusted to improve aerodynamics.
Bespoke 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels in a machined finish have also been added and new leather and Alcantara upholstery adorns various places in the cabin, including the doors and instrument panel.
The steering wheel, meanwhile, is also brand-spankers and features audio controls and an ’86 logo. To top it all off, the 2017 GT86 has a new 4.2-inch display for displaying things.
The Aero, Giallo and Primo trim levels have been replaced by a simpler two-tier system. Standard ‘GT86’ equipment includes cruise control, aluminium pedals, DAB digital radio and keyless go. The ‘GT86 Pro’ adds heated seats and the spoiler.
Toyota Touch 2 with Go for navigation and social media functionality is an optional extra.
Those who feel the current car is a bit underpowered will be disappointed to know it has the same 197bhp from its 2.0-litre flat-four. But then most of us were content with its rear-wheel shenanigans.
At least the suspension has been tweaked and the chassis made more rigid so it may offer a more involving ride and there is now a ‘Track Mode’ that turns off all electronic safety systems. Toyota fine-tuned the mode at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring so it could be more than a gimmick.
The entry-level GT86 will cost from £25,945 while the pricier GT86 Pro will cost from £27,095. Both models will go on sale in October 2016.
