The 394bhp Audi TT RS has arrived

The 394bhp Audi TT RS is set to embarrass even some supercars with absurd performance, quattro all-wheel drive and a whopping 394bhp.

The TT RS is the most powerful production TT ever and will be available as a Coupe and Roadster. Power comes from a 2.5-litre TFSI petrol mated to a seven-speed S tronic automatic, which outputs 400ps (394.4bhp) and 480Nm of torque between 1,700rpm and 5,850rpm.

Even though 17 per cent more powerful, the new lump weighs 26kg less. Meanwhile another 2kg was saved by providing a new angle drive to the prop shaft in the transmission. That helps give the TT RS a power-to-weight ratio of 277ps per ton.

Audi says the TT RS offers ‘supercar-style pace’ and on paper that seems to be the case. 0-62mph takes 3.7 seconds in the lighter Coupe (3.9 seconds in the roadster) and the top speed is 174mph if you spec the Dynamic Package Plus option ─ hairdresser, what?

As for the more economical aspect of the TT RS, Audi claims it will manage up to 34.4mpg and emit 187g/km of CO2, making it potentially frugal if you want it to be.

Stopping the TT RS is the job of 370mm perforated steel discs with eight-piston calipers and monobloc discs at the rear that measure 310mm. Even greater stopping power can be had with the optional carbon ceramic front discs.

The TT RS is designed to look meaty, hence a new honeycomb lattice grille with the Quattro logo in pride of place, aerodynamically-shaped side sills and a fixed rear wing on two struts. Said wing can be adjusted to the standard spoiler if owners want more of a ‘Q car’ thing going on. At the back are OLED rear lights – a first for a production Audi.

Nine paintjobs are available including Nardo grey and Catalunya red, both of which are metallic and specific to the range-topping model. Inside are Fine Nappa leather seats, a TT RS sport leather and Alcantara steering wheel and Audi’s 12.3-inch virtual cockpit display instead of dials.

Three years of Audi Connect also comes part of the package. It includes travel information, social media browsing, Google Street View and Google Earth mapping, weather updates and the ability to use your car as a mobile WiFi hotspot. A Bang & Olufsen sound system can be specced for extra.

Prices start from £51,800 for the TT RS Coupe and £53,550 for the TT RS Roadster. Production and orders will begin in late September 2016 in the UK. Suffice to say, we are very excited to get our hands on this one.
