BMW recently announced a special edition version of the M5 that was for the US market only. Luckily now we have a European equivalent known as the ‘Competition Edition’.
The BMW M5 Competition Edition is based on the standard M5 fitted with the optional Competition Package as standard. Meanwhile its 4.4-litre V8 has undergone an ECU update and boost pressure increase, upping power and torque by 40bhp and 16lb/ft, respectively.
That means a total of 592bhp and 516lb/ft of torque, which is good for 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155mph – although it would happily blast far beyond this.
Other extras include a recalibrated differential, reprogrammed M chassic control system, recalibrated steering and superior suspension that brings the car closer to the floor.
As for aesthetic changes, expect carbon fibre used for the rear diffuser, spoiler and mirror caps, while the standard issue kidney grille and side gills now wear ‘M5 Competition’ package badges. A choice of either a Carbon Black and Mineral White paintjob is available.
As for the interior, BMW has used Merino black leather with a touch of white contrast stitching, model-specific headrests, carbon fibre trim and a plaque that features the production run number of the car.
Just 200 will be available, each one costing from £101,000. That’s a hefty premium on the standard F10-generation M5, but then it comes with 20-inch jet black alloy wheels, a reversing camera, heated seats, electric boot lid, adaptive LED headlights and a Bang & Olufsen sound system out of the box.
The American version of the car is called the BMW M5 Pure Metal Limited Edition.
Apparently most of the M5 Competition Edition have sold so best to strike quick, although that could be a bit of sales patter to strum up interest. Not that a 600hp Bimmer is ever anything to be sniffed at.
