VW celebrates GTI’s 40th birthday with Clubsport model

Volkswagen is celebrating the Golf GTI’s 40th birthday with a special edition Golf that boasts improved acceleration, power and unique styling.

The VW Golf GTI Clubsport continues a tradition of anniversary editions that celebrated the 20th, 25th, 30th and 35th birthday of the much-loved badge and will be publically unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015.

Power has been increased to 290PS for the 2.0-litre TSI – a 35PS increase on the last Golf GTI. 0-62mph now takes six seconds with the six-speed manual and 5.9 seconds with the six-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic, while the top speed is 155mph.

Fuel economy for the manual and automatic is 40 and 42mpg, respectively, and CO2 emissions come in at between 155 and 160g/km.

A new front bumper, new side sills, new rear diffuser, exclusive 18-inch forged alloy wheels and a new multi-part roof spoiler gives the Golf GTI Clubsport a unique look, while revisions to the aerodynamics have increased downforce so it should be better in the corners.

The car is painted in Oryx White, although there are other options available. A contrasting black roof, black stripe on the side of the car with Clubsport lettering inspired by the 1976 Golf GTI, gloss black door mirror caps, black-red LED rear lights and a new air-deflector in the front bumper complete the look.

Also standard is a revised interior that features a ‘Honeycomb 40’ design, with an Alcantara gear lever and steering wheel providing a touch of luxury.

It also comes with customised floor mats with red edging, folding racing bucket seats and stainless steel door sill plates with red GTI lettering. 19-inch Bresica’ alloy wheels designed especially for the special edition Golf can be specified for a few extra quid.

No word on a price for the Golf GTI Clubsport edition, but it will almost certainly command a premium on the standard model but undercut the more powerful Golf R.
