Volkswagen want you to have your cake and eat it. Scratch that, they want you to shove it down your face with the feverishness of a fat kid in a cake shop.
That’s right; with the new Audi e-tron quattro, it’s plotting an all-electric SUV that could just be cheap to run, practical and kind to the environment.
It uses three electic motors (one at the front axle and two powering the rear) to deliver a total output of 320kW, or 429hp under normal driving. There’s even a short-term boost mode that can extract 370kW (496hp) and 800Nm, enough to haul it from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and onto a limited top speed of just over 130mph.
More impressive is the purported driving range. Audi says the 95kWh battery pack is sufficient for a whopping 311-mile range, which is the sort of distance you can expect to travel in a petrol- or diesel-powered car.
Audi claims the battery can be recharged in around 50 minutes via a 150kW DC fast charger, although those are currently about as easy to find as unicorn feathers. Speaking of rare future tech, the e-tron quattro can also charge wirelessly and park itself onto a compatible wireless charging plate without you even being in the vehicle.
Other cool additions? How about Matrix OLED lighting, which can run at full beam while effectively shutting down individual light ‘pixels’ so as not to blind oncoming traffic, OLED displays for its infotainment system, digital exterior ‘mirrors’ and a whopping 615-litre boot?
Sounds good, we think you’ll agree. Watch out for a production version sometime in 2018.
