VW GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo is a digital supercar we wish was real

Volkswagen is expanding its fleet in a digital sense with a sporty concept called the GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo. As the name suggests, it will be available within the Sony PlayStation 3 game, Gran Turismo 6.

Besides looking like a serious racing machine, the GTI Supersport Vision Gran Turismo has a 503hp VR6 TSI engine mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, a combination that helps propel it from 0 to 62mph in 3.6 seconds, making it faster than some Ferraris.

The top speed, meanwhile, is 186mph. Power is sent to the 20-inch GTI advanced alloy wheels using VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system so there will be little fanfare in putting that riotous level power to the tarmac.

Although reminiscent of the GTI you can buy (and the lairier Golf R), the Supersport GTI has been revised to make the body better at cutting through air and has a lower the centre of gravity, while the liberal use of carbon fibre keeps the weight down, resulting in a power-to-weight ratio of 2.5kg per horsepower.

That fat back end does more than add presence, it actually helps keep the brakes cool. A flamboyant rear spoiler, meanwhile, sticks the GTI Supersport to the floor.

Gran Turismo 6 gamers can choose to have the car in either Reflex Silver, Gran Turismo Red, Lapiz Blue or Oryx White. It can be downloaded now.

A number of other manufacturers have used video games to test out new concepts, including Renault’s Alpine Vision GT, Toyota’s FT-1 and the new Mazda MX-5.

We rounded up some of the crazier moments where video games and reality collide in the car world.
