VW reveals mighty Golf R400 concept

The VW Golf gets even more powerful with an R400 version.

Volkswagen has souped up its ever-popular Golf range with a new special edition Golf R400 concept. The R400, unveiled recently in China, sports a plethora of performance-enhancing modifications, chiefly an engine tuned to deliver an eye-watering 395bhp.

The motor, in case you’re wondering, is engineered by Volkswagen R – VW’s  special operations team, which is supervised by the same dude responsible for the A45 AMG.

It is essentially an angrier version of  the Golf R’s turbocharged 2-litre direct injection four-cylinder petrol engine and packs 332lb-ft of torque between 2,000 and 6000 RPM. That power is transmitted through a six-speed gearbox to all four wheels via VW’s electro-mechanical 4Motion four-wheel drive system.

The Golf R400 weighs 56kg less than the Golf R, so it’s no surprise its 0-62mph acceleration time has been cut from 6.4 seconds to a rapid 3.9 seconds. It’ll continue all the way to a top speed of 174mph.

Larger cooling ducts help with the control of airflow in and around the powerful engine. The car also features a larger bumper, splitter, wider wings and a carbonfibre wing to aid downforce.

ALl things considered, it’s clearly ready to take on its German rivals, the Mercedes Benz A45 AMG and BMW M235i. But if you plan to own one, you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled. Production will be low volume, if it happens at all.
