Think of a car that can beat the 887bhp Porsche 918 Spyder and you probably envision anything but the following rust bucket, which showed the hypercar who’s boss in a YouTube video.
The second-generation 1970 Chevrolet Carmaro Sleeper may look in poor condition, mainly because it looks as if the last time it was painted flared jeans were cool, but underneath the hood is anything but second-rate.
In fact, it has a highly modified LS7 V8 engine with two turbochargers and a list of parts probably as long as an arm to cope with the extra strain. The result is 1,400bhp of tyre-shredding muscle – 513bhp more than the 918 Spyder.
No wonder, then, the following video shows it smash a quarter of a mile in around nine seconds at just under 160mph. That’s a frankly ridiculous time for any car, let alone one that looks like it was left in a river for a few weeks.
Now it would be unfair to say the Porsche was slow. It manages to keep pace fairly convincingly given the massive power difference, but then it has electric motors that provide instant torque and power to the front wheels, and costs £1million.
The video, which was captured at the Street Car Takeover in Atlanta of the US, also shows what’s underneath the bonnet of the Chevy Camaro Sleeper as well as a few runs of it solo, complete with its thunderous engine note.
Before you cancel your purchase in favour of an old V8, here’s a reminder just how fast the 918 Spyder hypercar is compared with an older supercar from the Porsche stable.
