EE has launched 80Mbps 4G mobile broadband speeds in East London’s Tech City.
The partnership with Tech City, the capital’s online technology hub, aims to reposition London as the world’s best connected technology hub and make London more attractive to developers and start ups.
Olaf Swantee, EE’s CEO says that the speeds now available in London on EE’s network surpasses what’s available in New York:

We have the biggest and fastest network in the country – one that rivals anywhere in the world. The UK and the City of London are now leading the way, surpassing capitals like New York, and rivalling other major financial and business centres across the world.”
Read Recombu Digital’s guide to 4G in the UKAs well as improving network speeds in the area, EE will install 4G mobile WiFi hotspots in parts of Tech City, giving free superfast 4G access to all WiFi enabled devices.
Currently, average speeds enjoyed on EE’s 4G network are around 20-30Mbps, where headline speeds of 40Mbps are available. Rollout of the faster up-to-80Mbps speeds will see the average speeds climbing accordingly.
The EE speed doubling programme will eventually roll out across the rest of the country but the company is committed to keeping East London at the cutting edge. Future network upgrades and speed rollouts will take place first and foremost in Tech City.
EE is also looking at rolling out similar programmes in Bath, Belfast, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Newry, Sheffield and Sunderland over the coming months.
As well as rolling out 4G in the cities, EE is doing its part for rural rollout as well – at this year’s Glastonbury festival a 4GEE tractor will be doing the rounds, providing fast WiFi for rainsoaked revellers.
By the end of 2013, EE plans to have 70 per cent of the UK covered by its 4G network and 98 per cent 4G coverage by 2014.
