Virgin Media pinches Netflix speed king crown back from BT

Virgin Media has taken the top spot back from BT in Netflix’s latest streaming speeds test.

The latest Netflix Speed Index report shows that Virgin Media customers can expect a slightly better streaming experience than those on BT lines, a reversal of last month’s position.

Unlike Ofcom’s reports which focus on download and upload speeds, Netflix’s test provide a look at how the UK’s main ISPs perform when it comes to streaming video over a set period of time.

Crossing the streams: Virgin Media regains its top place in Netflix’s speed rankings

Read Recombu Digital’s guide to NetflixThe results reflect the speeds Netflix streams content on rather than provide a look at the actual peak time speeds provided by each ISP, which is why the numbers look much smaller than what you’d see here and here

Netflix’s director of corporate communications Joris Evers says that home networks and different devices such as laptops, tablets and phones are factors in determining the results.

Evers explains: “The listed speeds reflect the average performance of all Netflix streams on each ISP’s network and are an indicator of the performance typically experienced across all users on an ISP network.

“A faster network generally means a better picture quality, quicker start times and fewer interruptions.”

Looking at the figures you can see that there’s just a slight difference overall between ISPs. Virgin Media might be sitting at the top of the pile again, but BT’s not far behind.

Virgin Media provided average peak time speeds of 2.69Mbps while BT averaged at 2.50Mbps at peak times. O2 Broadband lines provided speeds of 2.32Mbps, a fraction above owners Sky (2.31Mbps). The UK’s most alliterative ISPs, EE and TalkTalk, provided streaming speeds of 2.28Mbps and 2.27Mbps respectively at peak times.
