Samsung may be the ones blurring the lines with the 4.8-inch display on the new Samsung Galaxy S3 flagship smartphone and the 5.3-inch display on the Samsung Galaxy Note ‘phonblet’, but it’s LG who is slotting in the void with a 5-inch display, however this one’s a little different.
LG is boasting the first 5-inch Full HD (1080p) LCD designed for a smartphone. The display utilises AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) technology giving it a pixel density for 440ppi. Compare that to the current top players on the field; the iPhone 4S’s 3.5-inch Retina Display with its 326ppi density, the HTC One X’s 4.7-inch IPS LCD with its 312ppi pixel density and of course the new iPad with its whopping 9.7-inch Retina Display sporting a 264ppi pixel density and you begin to understand just how razor sharp this display must look.
What’s more, unlike many current smartphone displays, LG’s panel uses a 16:9 aspect ratio making it perfect for full HD films and TV. Compared to its equivalent predecessor, a 4.5-inch 329ppi 1280×720 display, the new panel is 0.5-inches larger, 2.2x denser and in terms of ppi is 1.3 times more advanced.
LG Display’s CTO and Executive VP, Sang Deok-Yeo said, “As smartphones become increasingly valued for how well they do multimedia and with the rapid growth of LTE enabling faster large file transfers, our new 5″ Full HD LCD panel is certain to prove a significant asset to the mobile market.“
It won’t be officially taking to the stage until June 4th at the upcoming SID 2012 Display Week in Boston and we’ll have to wait even longer for it to arrive in devices, but the existence of this technology at all means that the display war is already moving in new directions.
