The world’s first wearable drone is a selfie machine

Take the ultimate selfies with the Nixie, a wearable drone which springs off your wrist to shoot you before flying back.

A drone camera which fastens to your wrist has been developed by Team Nixie, as a contender for Intel’s ‘Make it Wearable‘ contest. The Nixie drone is basically a tiny camera with four straps, which unfurls to convert into a quadcopter, snaps a selfie or a quick video and then returns to your wrist.

The Nixie is still in the design stage right now, but the prototype models give a good idea of what to expect. You’ll be able to send the Nixie flying from your wrist with a quick gesture, with the straps unfurling into arms with rotors at each end. The Nixie will then reveal its camera, get into position and shoot either a photo or a video, before returning to your wrist.

Quite how you specify what the Nixie will shoot isn’t too clear, but we’re assuming you can issue commands either before or during operation via your smart device.

The Nixie should be a great wearable device for outdoors and sporting enthusiasts if it ever comes to market, allowing you to snap spectacular shots while you concentrate on ploughing down ski slopes, leaping across rooftops or whatever energetic activities you personally enjoy. We’d probably use it to track exactly what we get up to on a Friday night, in a morbid curiosity kind of way.

Intel is judging the Make it Wearable contest on November 3rd, with a grand prize of $500,000 going to the most innovative product with the greatest market potential. Other entries so far include British invention Blocks, a modular smartwatch that can be pieced together like Lego, with whatever components you like.
