Sony Mobile has announced a new Android smartphone, the Xperia sola which includes an NFC chip and 3.7-inch touchscreen with non-touch touchscreen navigation.
Available in black, white and red, the Sony Xperia sola follows the same design aesthetic as the Sony Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia U, with square edges, but it’s the first phone to include: ‘Sony’s unique floating touch’ technology. This is a new type of navigation, where you don’t actually touching the screen, instead hover your finger above it – like a moving cursor – and links highlight and can be tapped.
It sounds really interesting, but until we actually get to try it, it’s hard to judge how successful it it is – or how useful it will be. Check out the video underneath. Sony is clearly has a plan to develop it further, stating: ‘Floating touch will evolve with new user functionality and applications through software updates and engagement with developers.’
The phone will launch on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with an update to Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich planned for Q2 2012. The 3.7-inch Reality Display includes Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA Xpera sola and includes a dual-core 1Ghz STE U8500 processor.
Like the Sony Xperia S, the Xperia sola includes an NFC chip and comes with two of Sony’s SmartTags, which can be used to program specific commands
