UK newspaper The Sun has launched its official iPad app this morning, charging £4.99 for the initial download, and then a £4.99 subscription every 28 days. The first 28 days are included in the download price, however.
This makes it half the price of its sister paper The Times, which launched with a £9.99 download point and then the same price every 28 days. The app includes the full daily print edition of The Sun, plus an ‘iEdition’ for breaking news – a neat feature that we haven’t seen in many other newspaper iPad apps.
But equally big news is the fact that the infamous Page 3 has made it through unscathed, despite Apple’s strict policy on nudity and topless content on the App Store. That’s a photo of the app running on my iPad above, with a carefully placed logo to preserve the family-friendly nature of this website (the original photo is here as proof that the app is uncensored).
Chloe, 22 from Leeds, hasn’t been blurred, black-boxed or otherwise censored at all. Which at least answers the question of how Apple plans to relax its policy for newspapers that include this kind of content.
Meanwhile, the App Store blurb hints at more interactive features in future updates, such as crosswords and puzzles.
