The first smartphone with a 2560×1440 display is from a company you’ve never heard of

The spec race will never be truly over. The geek deep inside us always wants the best of the best, the latest and greatest, and the very cutting edge. That’s definitely why this smartphone from Chinese company Vivo caught our eye.

The Xplay3S (yes, really) will be the first smartphone in the world to include a display with a resolution of 2560×1440. There’s no word on the size of the screen, but LG demoed a 5.5-inch prototype earlier this year with the same resolution. Assuming that’s the panel Vivo is going for, then it be the highest pixel density on a phone yet at 534 PPI.

What benefit is that even going to bring, though? Phones with 5-inch 1080p displays are already bordering on overkill. At this point, the focus should really be on power consumption, colour gamut, and contrast – especially given that LG’s display prototype was an IPS LCD.

Other specs for Vivo’s phone include a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC and LTE support, but we’ll probably never see this thing outside of China.
