LG officially announces white Nexus 4, denies ‘Nexus 5’ production rumours

After a ton of images and a bonafide hands-on in Thailand late last week, the white Nexus 4 is finally official. LG announced this morning that the white variant of Google’s stock Android showcase will be made available across the globe in the coming weeks, with the handset due to launch in Hong Kong as soon as May 29th.

The new colour won’t be bringing any spec changes, however. The phone will still feature a 4.7-inch 1280×768 IPS display, along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and an 8-megapixel camera. It doesn’t look like a 32GB or LTE enabled version of the Nexus 4 will be coming at all, then. There’s no word on if Google intends to sell the white version of the phone through the Play Store either.

LG also recently denied rumours that it will be working on the next Nexus handset. In an interview with dutch site All About Phones, Kim Wong – the Vice President of LG Mobile – explained that while “the Nexus 4 was a great success”, the company “[does] not need such a marketing success again.” A strange comment to make, but LG seems more focused on offering its own experience to users rather than serving up stock Android on a Google approved device.

And if you’re hoping that LG will offer a “Google Edition” in the wake of the Galaxy S4 news, then you’ll be disappointed. Wong went on to say that the company currently has no plans to produce such a device because it would bring “no added value” for LG.

Update: LG has pinged The Verge to clarify comments made by Kim Wong. The company says that it wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to work with Google on a Nexus device again if it was offered the chance, but isn’t working on a “Nexus 5” device. LG closes by saying that its mobile business as whole is successful, and that it doesn’t “need” a Nexus phone in its portfolio to compete.
