Mazda MX-5 Speedster and Spyder concepts need to reach production

Mazda has unveiled two concept versions of the MX-5 roadster – and we’re praying to the car gods both become production cars because they look the business.

The Mazda MX-5 Speedster and MX-5 Spyder, unveiled at the 2015 SEMA show in Las Vegas, are said to ‘take the lightweight fun-to-drive roadster doctrine a step further’.

This has been achieved by making the cars lighter. In fact, the MX-5 Speedster weighs a mere 943kg, while the MX-5 Spyder is a fraction meatier at 1,043kg – both undercutting the production car’s 1,050kg including a 75kg driver.

Vintage roadsters are the theme when it comes to the design. The MX-5 Spyder features a bikini top, Mercury Silver paintjob, 17-inch Yokohama Advan racing RS II alloy wheels and a Spinneybeck Prima full-grain leather interior.

Helping make the MX-5 Speedster even lighter are 16-inch Rays 57 Extreme Gram Lights alloy wheels, carbon fibre doors, carbon fibre seats trimmed in black Alcantara and a deflector instead of a windscreen. , Brembo four-piston front brake calipers, meanwhile, help improve stopping power.

The MX-5 Speedster has a Blue Ether paintjob and adjustable coilover suspension, which lets the MX-5 Speedster sit 30mm lower than the standard car for a sportier look and feel.

Mazda North American Operations design manager Ken Saward said: “Both MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster are uncompromising designs that highlight the core strengths of MX-5.

“With the all-new 2016 MX-5, we have a clean sheet to show how the aftermarket can go wild on our flagship sports car while staying true to its mission.”

Both the MX-5 Speedster and MX-5 Spyder can be found on Mazda’s stand in the North Hall at the Las Vegas show until it ends on the 6th of November 2015.

No word if either concept will make it to production, sadly, but at least the standard MX-5 starts from a modest £18,495.
