Mitsubishi Emirai 3 concept car senses your physical condition

Mitsubishi has announced the Emirai 3 xDAS, a concept car that focusses on ‘safety and comfort of driving’ and knows your physical condition.

Following on from the Emirai 2 xDas revealed at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, the Emirai 3 xDAS showcases ‘evolved’ versions of driver sensing, telematics, light control and a human machine interface.

The star of the show is the non-contact cardiograph co-developed with the National University Corporation Kyushu Institute of Technology (bit of a mouthful), which detects your heart rate.

That and a camera trained on your face allows the Emirai 3 to work out if you are in your usual physical condition. In the case you seem slower to react or spend less time looking ahead compared with previous journeys, indicating fatigue, it will suggest places to have a quick break.

It also has a clever infotainment system that allows you to change the air temperature of the car or music volume by using certain hand motions so there’s no need to take your eyes off the road. It can even work with wearable devices to notify passengers of certain information.

Meanwhile a ‘Combiner 3D head-up display’ projects useful information up to more than 10 metres ahead in the driver’s line of sight so you have plenty of time to react to potential hazards you might have missed.

Multiple LCD panels instead of traditional analogue dials located in front of the driver give the impression of one much larger display and can be customised to create ‘highly personalised interiors’. Said displays use a special panel that reduces reflections so they are visible in bright conditions.

Cameras outside the car and analysis of map data on the fly allows the Emirai 3 xDAS to identify potentially dangerous sections of road such as intersections with poor visibility and help you negotiate them. It can even recognise the same location or situation and react automatically the next time.

Mitsubishi will undoubtedly elaborate on the technical systems in the Emira 3 xDAS as we head towards its big unveiling at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show from October 29th. Until then, check out the only two pictures we have of this bonkers concept car.
