Somerset man proposes to girlfriend in cop car

We’ve heard of people proposing in some pretty random situations, but this one trumps the lot. Caine Hutchings asked to marry to his beloved in the back of a police car after crashing into a tree in Somerset.

30-year-old Mr Hutchings, from Radstock, was driving from his home to the seaside town of Blue Anchor in Minehead, Somerset where he planned to tie the knot with his partner when disaster struck. He lost control of his vehicle near Bridgwater on the A39 and crashed into a tree.

Following this they were collected by police constable Nicola Rickards who agreed to drive the loved-up couple to a local pub. On the way Caine Hutchings asked his girlfriend of two and a half years, Emily Dukeson, to be his wife – much to Rickard’s amazement.

Thankfully for him she said yes.

Caine said: “We were only in the police car a short time but the accident had put everything in perspective, so I decided that I would ask there and then because anything can change in just a moment and I didn’t want to wait any longer.

“We had to get a photo of me going down on one knee in front of the police car after we got to the pub or no-one would have believed what I’d done.”

“I didn’t have a clue that was going to happen,” 27-year-old Ms Dukeson admitted: “As far as I was aware we were going to Blue Anchor to take the dogs for a walk. In the car Caine said ‘did you really think we were going all that way just to walk the dogs?’ and pulled the box [with the ring in it] out.”

The police constable who witnessed the whole event added: “All of a sudden he produced the box through the middle. I’m not sure who was more excited.” The officer later revealed she said wouldn’t leave until Caine proposed properly at the pub.

The west country couple plan to tie the knot next year.
