Ssangyong XLV is a stretched Tivoli

Geneva Motor Show 2016: South Korean manufacturer Ssangyong is boosting the appeal of the Tivoli for families by offering a larger version.

The Ssangyong XLV uses the same platform and same 2.6-metre wheelbase as the standard Tivoli, but has a lengthened section of body stretching from behind the C-pillar that increases length by 238mm.

This has the benefit of increasing the boot capacity to 720 litres and increases leg, shoulder and head room for all five passengers. Adding to the practicality are 60:40 rear split folding seats, allowing for slightly longer loads.

Not only that, the Tivoli XLV ─ short for ‘exciting smart life style vehicle ─ has various storage spaces throughout the car and some shopping-specific extras in the boot such as a shopping bag hook, luggage net and an under floor storage area.

Choosing an engine should be easy because there are just two on offer, a 1.6-litre diesel or a 1.6-litre petrol (both Euro 6 compliant). The former has 115PS, produces 300Nm of torque and emits just 117g/km of CO2 emissions, making it the more frugal of the two and the better choice overall.

Should you go for the petrol, expect 128PS, 160Nm of torque and 159g/km of CO2. Both engines come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard and a six-speed Aisin automatic can be specced, as well as four-wheel drive instead of the standard front-wheel drive setup.

Another plus of the Tivoli found on the XLV is the safety equipment list, which includes seven airbags, dual pre-tensioners for the seatbelt, LED daytime running lights and big brake discs at the front and rear.

Adding to the list of standard equipment are parking sensors for the front and rear, one touch automatic wash/wipe, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, interior mood lighting and an electrochromic rearview mirror.

We went for a spin in the Tivoli last year and found the diesel version to be a pleasantly capable and fun car to drive that looked as funky as its competitors (maybe more so) ─ all for not a lot of money. Hopefully the stretched version, which is yet to be priced, can make the same impression.
