There is a new trailer for Jeremy Clarkson’s The Grand Tour that hints at a return to what the trio did best on Top Gear ─ and the Internet is very pleased.
So pleased, in fact, that it has amassed a whopping 40,783 YouTube likes at the time of writing, compared with a mere 121 dislikes and that is with only 92,000 views. Time to put that Ben Collins video from the old series out of your head – this, folks, is the real deal.
As Jeremy Clarkson says in the latest and most revealing trailer to date, “looking good is more important than looking where you are going,” and you could easily view this as a slight jibe at the BBC (as is the outro logo shot). That alleged £160-million budget is reflected nicely in just how slick it looks.
Substance is more important than style though, which is presumably why the opening begins with Clarkson, Hammond and May turning up to a track on a rainy day, with May sporting a broken arm earned from falling over in a pub the night before filming. How very Top Gear.
The trailer provides a quick glimpse at the new tent, which is lugged between each country over each 12-episode series and used to house the studio audience. Then there is sneak preview of the holy trinity showdown Clarkson always wanted. That’s the McLaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder, if you are unsure.
So The Grand Tour appears to have the cars and it appears to have the silly British banter and chemistry between the presenters, which was sorely lacking in the Chris Evans reboot of Top Gear. What could possibly go wrong?
Well, the budget is high and there are still a fair few technophobes out there who won’t even know what Amazon Prime is, let alone subscribe to it. Even with such a big initial outlay though, the number of new subscribers to break even seems doable. Maybe not by the end of season one, but certainly by season two and three.
And even if it crashes and burns spectacularly, it looks like anyone who enjoyed the old Top Gear is in for a treat. Best to tune in from the 18th of November 2016 to see the first episode and then come back each Friday for the rest of the series.
